Swine Flu Dangers – Should You Be Worried?

In the early month of 2009, a new type of strain from the well known virus H1N1 began to spread. Even though one should be aware of such a virus, it is not really the time to start to panic.One should know what it is all about before making imortant decision and therefore should know the facts available. The virus was confirmed officially on the 24th of April 2009 after which, in the following days, cases were found of the virus in areas such as Mexico, the United States, the UK, and Israel to mention a few.
Since there were more than four thousand cases of people who were infected with this virus, the World Health Organisation increased its alertness to level 5, which means that this virus from spread from human to human contact in at least two countries which are members of the World Health Organisation. Despite the scale of the alert, WHO officials noted on April 29 the majority of people infected with the virus have made a full recovery without need of medical attention or antiviral drugs.
In late April 2009 officials from both WHO and the CDC expressed serious concern about the spread of the virus, stating that the virus had the potential to become flu pandemic. A pandemic is the spread of a disease over a large area such as an entire country, continent or the entire world. Due to the newness of the influenza strain, its transmission from human to human, and the unusually high mortality rate in Mexico the WHO formally determined the situation to be a “public health emergency of international concern.
This disease is different from other illness because unlike cases such as chicken pox, human will never be able to become completely immune to the swine flu since it constnatly changing and producing new version of itself as the time passes. The only thing that people should do at the moment is take all the usual hygiene procedure and follow them to the letter – wash hands, cover mouth when sneezing, etc – and visit their doctor if they feel that are getting the flu. The only thing that they should not do is panic.
Time magazine recently reported that researchers at Northwestern University “estimated that even if nothing were done to slow the spread of the disease from now on, by the end of May the U.S. would have only about 1,700 cases.” Furthermore, the good news is the H1N1 flu virus is hitting North America at the end of flu season; it may very well phase itself out and re-appear in the fall, but that gives health officials months to prepare.
